The independent business Supa IGA in Seville, Victoria, has completed a $5 million makeover and gone green in the process.
Third-generation grocer and owner Barry Entwistle said the renovation and extension have been designed with outstanding green credentials as part of the business’s commitment to lowering its carbon footprint, developed through it taking part in the business sustainability program run by the Yarra Ranges Shire.
“We’ve tried to really minimise our carbon footprint by reducing energy use and, because we’ve refurbished, we’ve taken the opportunity to make things more efficient,” said Entwistle. Environmental credentials include utilising reclaimed cooled air ducted from the store’s refrigerators into the supermarket and reclaimed hot air generated by refrigeration motors used for heating.
The makeover will double the shop's size and allow it to substantially increase its service to the local community. The new store includes a Bendigo Community Bank and a café is planned to open in the building within weeks.
“Local people also told us it was important that the changes were in keeping with a ‘country town’ feel, so we’ve done that, using wooden finishes and corrugated iron in the signage for example."
Seville's IGA is a keen supporter of local Yarra Valley producers with a strong focus on sourcing produce locally.
The store will be formally opened today and a community party will be held on Saturday 6 March with a range of activities for the family.
