Brumby's Bakeries franchise network is partnering with Sesame Street’s Healthy Habits for Life program, an initiative to help young children and their caregivers establish an early foundation of healthy habits that can last a lifetime. In a campaign which started on 13 April and runs until 24 May, families are being encouraged to ‘Go Brown’ with Brumby’s franchisees giving away a free Sesame Street item with the purchase of wholemeal sandwich loaf and six rolls for $6.50.   There is a different item each week including a Sesame Street pencil case, water bottle, enviro bag and insulated cooler bag.

Brumby’s marketing manager Michelle McBride said children needed to be introduced to wholemeal bread as research showed it could assist with their growth, development and immune systems.

“Fostering wholemeal bread eating habits early in a child’s life will also allow them to experience the full health benefits provided by wholemeal,” she said. “Australian experts suggest that children should eat 10g of fibre a day plus an additional gram for every year of age. For instance, a 10 year old child should eat 15 to 20g of fibre per day.”

On average, most Australians consume 18 to 25g of fibre daily, well below the National Heart Foundation of Australia’s recommendation of approximately 30g.

Brumby’s serves more than 700,000 Australians a week through its 300 plus franchised stores.
